Getting a toddler or older baby into a sleeping bag for the first time: If you are trying to get your one year old to sleep in a sleeping bag, but aren’t sure if he is going to take to it, then try putting him in and zipping only the top 10cm of the zip up, leaving his feet out, so that he doesn’t feel constricted. Once asleep, simply pop his feet into the bababag and zip him up. You won’t have to do that for much more than a 3 or 4 nights before he gets used to being snug and warm all night long! Another tip on getting older babies and toddlers into sleeping bags is to choose a lighter weight one – the Spring/Autumn bababag, for example is a good weight to start with in winter for older children as it isn’t as thick and therefore doesn’t make them feel constricted in any way, but will still keep them warm and snug through the night.
Which bababag for winter: If you have panel heating or under floor heating in your baby’s room (or if you have a warm house with a flat roof for example), then generally, the Spring/Autumn bababag should be sufficient to keep your baby warm through the night. And remember, some babies are hot and some are cold, so get to know what your baby likes by gauging her temperature by touching the back of her neck. How do I tell if my baby is warm enough at night? She has such cold hands! Your baby’s hands are NOT an indicator of how cold or hot your baby is whilst sleeping, since her whole system slows down whilst sleeping and blood flow to the extremities is minimised. The best way to tell if your baby is warm enough or too hot, is to check the back of her neck with your hands. Remember to layer and unlayer your baby under her sleeping bag and use your FREE thermometer as a guideline as to what to dress your baby for the temperature in her nursery. And remember, if you are breast feeding, you tend to be warmer, so don’t use your own temperature as a guideline on how to dress your baby! |
